Industry Overview

The Retail Industry is vitally important as it impacts the global economy. It can be described as the process of selling consumer goods and services to customers through multiple channels of distribution to earn a profit.

The LDSC covers Retail, Community Pharmacy and Floristry.

Retail

Food Retailing including supermarket and grocery stores, fruit and vegetable grocers, liquor stores and other specialised food retailing (such as cake or bread retailing not manufactured on the same premises).

Other Store-Based Retailing is the largest area of retail and covers the buying/selling of furniture, floor coverings, houseware, manchester, textile goods, electrical, electronic and gas appliance goods, computer and computer peripheral equipment, hardware and building supplies, garden supplies, recreational goods such as sport and camping equipment, entertainment media, toy and games, newspapers and books, marine equipment, clothing, footwear, watch and jewellery, other personal accessory retailing department stores, stationery, antique and used goods, flower retailing, other store-based retailing such as art gallery operation and ice retailing.

Non-Store Retailing refers to goods being sold without the use of a shopfront or a physical store. These include direct mail, selling of books, cosmetics, goods, internet, milk vending, mobile food and vending machine operations.

Retail Commission-Based Buying and/or Selling includes milk vending, buying service, books, cosmetics, health foods and selling service (such as auction services). These sectors mainly sells goods to the public on a fee or commission basis.

Community Pharmacy

Community Pharmacy is focused on the retail (buying and selling) of goods sold within a pharmacy consisting of retailing toiletries, cosmetics, perfume, dispensing medicine, patent medicines and prescription drugs.

Floristry

Floristry includes the cutting of flowers, display foliage, and dried flowers designed by a florist. The selling of a diverse range of floristry products can be conducted in store or through online channels.

​Licensing Requirements

The licensing requirements in Retail are similar to Wholesale, where licences are required for restricted products such as Tobacco, Alcohol and Medicine/Poison. Additionally, a licence, certificate or ticket must be obtained to legally be allowed to serve or operate.  

1. Forklift licence  
  • In order to operate a forklift, participants must be at least 18 years of age and hold a High Risk Work Licence issued by Worksafe. If the forklift is to be driven on a main road, the driver must also hold a valid class C Licence.
2. Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate
  • To serve or sell alcohol in Western Australia, participants must be at least 18 years of age and hold a Provide responsible service of alcohol’ (SITHFAB009A) certificate which is recognised across all Australian jurisdictions.
3. SIRCIND002 Support the Supply of Pharmacy Medicines and Pharmacist Only Medicines (S2/S3 Certificate)  
  • This requirement is specifically for any non-pharmacist staff to supply pharmacy medicines and support the pharmacist in providing pharmacist only medicines.  
  • Please note, to undertake the S2/S3 Certificate the student must be working within a pharmacy.
A licence may be required is for specialty retailers, however these may differ. For example, those selling watercraft may need a recreational skipper’s ticket; whereas those hiring out electrical equipment may require a portable appliance tester (PAT) licence.
It is recommended to check with Industry to determine what licences, certificates or tickets may be required.

Occupations / Skills in Demand

Retail
The two highest occupations in demand are Retail Managers and Sales Assistant. Other job roles within retail include but are not limited to:
  • Sales Representative
  • Retail Supervisor
  • Visual Merchandiser
  • Merchandise Buyer
  • Planner

Community Pharmacy
Occupations for Community Pharmacy include but are not limited to:
  • Pharmacy Clerk
  • Pharmacy Dispenser
  • Pharmacy Assistant / Medicines Counter Assistant
  • Dispensary Technician
  • Pharmacist
Retail community pharmacy is aimed at individuals seeking a Pharmacy Assistant role only.  Please note, the level of education required to work in a pharmacy can differ. The occupation of pharmacist is covered by a different training package. Those wanting information relating to the training for this profession should visit the Training Council responsible for this (Community Skills WA).

​Floristry
Occupations for Floristry include but are not limited to:
  • Floristry Assistant
  • Online Florist
  • Senior Florist (in shop or online)
  • Specialist Designer (Floral)
There are skills and attributes in demand that are highly transferable across the sectors for entry level roles for Retail, Community Pharmacy and Floristry. These include but are not limited to:

Retail ​Training Package

Training Package qualifications are developed through a process of consultation with Australian stakeholders, including those in WA. SkillsIQ are responsible for providing expert advice on training packages by ensuring relevant information outlining the skills, education and pathways for entry into these industries. Each of the training packages available for these industries promotes career advancement, workforce development and potential employment opportunities.

​How Can I Begin a Career in Retail?

These industries do not require the completion of a qualification as a condition of entry. However, for career progression opportunities it is recommended to undertake relevant training which will help future students/employees to gain a deeper understanding of these customer focused sectors.

Keep in mind that organisations within these sectors, often conduct their own in-house training and any special requirements are usually obtained during employment if deemed necessary by the employer.
