The West Australian government has signed up to a 12-month skills agreement with the Commonwealth to deliver about 18,800 fee-free training places worth more than $112 million.
The funding supports the new FREE IN ’23 initiative, which covers course fees for 58 full TAFE qualifications and course fees and resource fees for 56 skills sets. The course list is estimated to see approximately 8,500 fee free places in the care sector, 2,400 in technology and digital, 1,900 in agriculture, 1,500 in construction, 1,400 in hospitality and tourism, 300 in sovereign capability including manufacturing, and around 2,800 in other sectors including foundational skills. Australian Industry Standards (AIS) recently released the 2022 Supply Chain Industry Outlook that identifies six megatrends impacting the supply chain. The Outlook focuses on the following industries in the supply chain that AIS supports: Transport and Logistics, Aviation, Maritime, and Rail.
The report is a snapshot of a continually evolving story that is intended to alert and inform a wide audience and enhance the industry’s capacity to act on workforce development initiatives. We are currently evaluating a proposal to vary an existing Class B Traineeship (TLI31216 Certificate III Driving Operations) to a Class A Heavy Vehicle Driving Apprenticeship (TLI31221 Certificate III in Driving Operations) through an Establishment and Variation of Apprenticeship (EVAC) process via the STB. As our initial consultations identified differing suitability needs for WA stakeholders, in particular for the Bus and Dangerous Goods sectors, further evaluation is required to ensure the proposed apprenticeship meets the needs of WA employers across all industries. As well as determining any potential impacts to training arrangements or business requirements. TeamWA won the Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) Shield for the second time running in an unforgettable display of Western Australia's training and skills excellence at the 2021 WorldSkills Australia National Championships.
Of the 150 medals awarded, TeamWA competitors won 54 medals - 19 gold, 22 silver and 13 bronze medals - and seven awards for excellence. Click here for more information. To reduce the WA shortage of truck drivers, the expanded Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set will commence in Term 4, in the South-West at South Regional TAFE. This follows four months of a pilot program in Perth. Successful participants obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR), Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) vehicle licence and may apply for a forklift (LF) licence. The course is free for eligible students and the Practical Driving Instruction Training, assessment and licencing costs are $500 for concession students and up to $1,250 for non-concession students.
