The State Government is extending access to subsidised training to support refugees and asylum seekers from Ukraine and Afghanistan as they seek to take up job opportunities in Western Australia. The new initiative will support this cohort to gain skills and sustainable employment, as well as efforts to build a pipeline of skilled workers to take up job opportunities in occupations experiencing skills shortages in coming years. Access to subsidised training will be made available from January 2023 for the following visa holders:

The LDSC team recently undertook a brief regional trip to Geraldton this month. During the visit, the LDSC to met with the Airport, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Central Regional TAFE, Mid-West Port and the Mid-West Development Commission. Some common themes emerging from discussion points included but were not limited to the evolving landscape of workforce development, regional housing and workforce shortages impacting Mid-West supply chains. The LDSC thanks all those who participated in the consultations. The LDSC is planning to undertake a second regional trip to the area later this year to meet with more industries under our remit (i.e., Aviation, Road Transport, Retail, Community Pharmacy, Floristry, Warehousing and Logistics, Maritime, Ports and Stevedoring, Freight Forwarding, Rail, Postal and Wholesaling). The State Government has launched a free online platform to connect Job Ready workers with the growing list of job opportunities available with Western Australian employers. Job Ready Connect is exclusively available to Job Ready program graduates and participating WA employers. By registering on Job Ready Connect, employers can easily and securely search for and connect with candidates who have the skills and experience they require.

Recently announced in the Budget, the Federal Government will commit an additional $500 million, to be matched by State and Territory governments, to expand the JobTrainer Fund by a further 163,000 places and extend the program until 31 December 2022. The Fund will support training in digital skills and upskilling in critical industries (I.e. Rail). The JobTrainer Fund was launched in 2020 and will support hundreds of thousands of job seekers, school leavers and young people by providing access to free or low-fee training places in areas of skills shortages.
