Transport and Logistics IRC Recommend Heavy Vehicle Driver Apprenticeship be Developed

Following consultation over September to October 2021, Australian Industry Standards (AIS) have advised, the Transport and Logistics Industry Reference Committee (IRC) have recommended that a national apprenticeship be established utilising the existing Certificate III in Driving Operations (TLI 31221).

Mandatory Vaccination and Border Closures Update

Based on the latest health advice, a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for most occupations and workforces will be introduced in a phased approach. This approach will apply mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for expanded industries in WA (which will be classified as either Group 1 or Group 2 industries and occupations), as well as introducing a requirement for all critical workers to be vaccinated to attend work in the event of a lockdown or similar restrictions.  ​

New Report: Workforce Challenges in Supply Chain and Logistics

Deakin University’s Centre for Supply Chain and Logistics and Wayfinder: Supply Chain Careers for Women has released a report exploring the issues impacting the supply chain workforce. This includes forecasting the future skills this workforce will require. The report found that a powerful mix of historical issues has caused restrictions for industry as demand for workers grows. There has been massive industry transformation occurring at an unprecedented rate, an explosion of new technologies and an increased focus on ethical and sustainable practices. Geopolitical factors which have also influenced the industry and contributed to skills shortages.

SkillsWest Expo 2021

The SkillsWest Careers and Employment Expo along with the WorldSkills Australia National Championships, was hosted at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 26th - 28th of August. This event showcased the ultimate skills, training and jobs opportunities for WA’s current and future workforce.
 
The LDSC team had the opportunity to attend this event to network and see WA's talented floristry competitor.

Job Ready Connect: Connecting Skilled-up Workers to Jobs

The State Government has launched a free online platform to connect Job Ready workers with the growing list of job opportunities available with Western Australian employers. Job Ready Connect is exclusively available to Job Ready program graduates and participating WA employers. By registering on Job Ready Connect, employers can easily and securely search for and connect with candidates who have the skills and experience they require.

Workforce of the Future: Getting the Qualifications Right

The LDSC team recently attended the Workforce of the Future: Getting the Qualifications Right on the 28 May 2021. The webinar had over 800 attendees across Australia, representing State and Territory Government agencies, RTOs, Training Councils and other industry stakeholders. The webinar provided a discussion from the perspective of three industry leaders from the Skills Organisations Pilots on what needs to be done to improve the national VET qualifications.

Training Places to be Increased

Recently announced in the Budget, the Federal Government will commit an additional $500 million, to be matched by State and Territory governments, to expand the JobTrainer Fund by a further 163,000 places and extend the program until 31 December 2022. The Fund will support training in digital skills and upskilling in critical industries (I.e. Rail). The JobTrainer Fund was launched in 2020 and will support hundreds of thousands of job seekers, school leavers and young people by providing access to free or low-fee training places in areas of skills shortages.
