Civmec has invested in shipbuilding and sustainment capability with a new 70-metre high hall supporting marine, defence and resources sectors located in Henderson, Western Australia. The new ship assembly hall makes it one of the largest fabrication workshops in Australia.
Shipbuilder Civmec and marine services specialist Serco have joined forces in pursuit of the LAND 8710 Phase 1A program that will deliver the next generation landing craft or littoral maneuver vessels for the Australian Army. This is a medium class vessel capable of shipping Army’s future vehicles in riverine and shore environments. The team designed the ‘Oboe’ littoral maneuver vessel medium (LMV-M) to meet the needs of the ADF - LAND 8710-1A program. Serco, Civmec partner on LAND 8710 with new joint venture - Defence Connect Over the next decade, more than $1 billion will be invested by the Federal Government to upgrade 73 Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reserve and Cadet facilities across Australia.
The infrastructure investment will support the growth of the ADF Cadets by 10 percent over the next year and is just one component of a number of initiatives being implemented to enhance the cadet program, such as; o Defence will increase numbers in existing cadet units create new units to complement broader Government initiatives supporting youth development and skilling. Future cadets will be engaged in: o STEM-focused activities including cyber security, virtual reality simulation, robotics, and flight simulation to supplement traditional skills developed through the program.

The Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) have advised a series of free briefings will be held Nationally, including regional WA. The briefings will provide advice and direction to the defence industry and businesses in supplying to defence and defence supply chains, and to learn more about ODIS. The LDSC, in conjunction with the Utilities, Electrical, Engineering and Automotive (UEEA) Training Council, worked very closely with WA defence industry stakeholders and South Metropolitan TAFE to establish a Defence Industry Training Pathway Program.

The Federal government has launched a $10 million program that will provide West Australian high school graduates with a fully funded 12 month traineeship to help grow WAs defence workforce.
The Naval Shipbuilding College has joined forces with Australia’s defence industry to create an online jobs portal showcasing the breadth of opportunities generated by the Government’s booming naval shipbuilding program.
The Defence Industry Veterans Employment Scheme (DIVES) scholarship program will encourage veterans to take-up a career in the defence industry. The program will be delivered by Defence West, in partnership with industry, starting in 2021.
The Women in Defence Industry scholarship program is delivered by South Metropolitan TAFE, in partnership with industry. The program offers two qualifications, achieved over six months; the Certificate II in Electronics, and the Certificate III in Engineering — Technical, which can open up a range of job and career opportunities in the defence industry. Applications are now open and provides a fantastic opportunity for women thinking of a career change or returning to the workforce.

The Australian Industry Skills Committee (AISC) has recently released Cases for Change for Rail, Aviation, Transport and Logistics, Maritime, and Defence sectors. This work is aimed at ensuring qualifications, Skill Sets and Units of Competency reflect current technologies, industry practices, and regulations and requires industry feedback required by Tuesday, 11 May 2021 for all sectors.
