The Office of the State Training Board has advised Certificate III in Mobile Crane Operations has recently been established as a Class B Traineeship, as published in the Government Gazette on 29 July 2022. The Department has assigned Jobs and Skills WA Funding for training delivery as follows:  Thirty exceptional individuals and thirteen organisations were named as finalists at this year’s WA Training Awards 2022. The Awards emphasize excellence in the vocational education and training sector. The Rail, Maritime, and Defence Industries have a strong presence at this year’s final. With three finalists in the running for the coveted WA Trainee of the Year Award, and one finalist aiming to secure the WA Industry Collaboration Award.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics is updating ANZSCO and invites submission on the way skills are reflected and how ANZSCO is maintained. The ANZSCO is used by governments and organisations in activities such as matching job seekers with job vacancies, shaping educational pathways, skilled migration programs and workforce strategies that equip Australians with skills to get jobs and stay employed. The ANZSCO still largely reflects the original 2006 version which was based on the 2001 Australian and New Zealand labour markets.

The State Government has opened the latest round of its Regional Traineeship Program to boost skills development and employment opportunities across regional Western Australia. The $2 million funding round is available to Western Australian Community Resource Network Community Resource Centres (CRCs) and eligible local government authorities to support trainees in regional areas. Grants of up to $38,000 per trainee are available to assist in the development of trainees' skills and knowledge, based on business and industry needs.

The Australian Government has introduced legislation to establish an interim Jobs and Skills Australia, a statutory body to provide independent advice on current, emerging, and future workforce, skills, and training needs. Jobs and Skills Australia will build on the work started by the National Skills Commission. The proposed broader remit includes a focus on workforce planning and developing closer partnerships with state and territory governments, unions, industry, and education providers.
A period of consultation will soon commence on the permanent model for Jobs and Skills Australia, including as part of September’s Jobs and Skills Summit. Capped airfares have been embraced by regional Western Australia, with more than 4,400 fares sold since the introduction of the scheme on July 1. Demand on key regional air routes has been strong, with residents taking the opportunity to visit Perth to catch up with family and friends, attend appointments, or enjoy a break using the capped airfares. The new $19.8 million scheme - the first of its kind in Australia - is a partnership between the State Government and five airlines; Airnorth, Qantas, Rex Airlines, Skippers Aviation and Virgin Australia Airlines, with the capped airfares scheme funded for the next three years.

The Federal Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit will be held at Parliament House in Canberra on 1-2 September. The Summit will bring together Australians, including unions, employers, civil society and governments to address shared economic challenges. The aim of the summit is to build a bigger, better-trained and more productive workforce; boost incomes and living standards; and create more opportunities for more Australians to get ahead and to reach their aspirations.

Broome will pilot a new grant scheme to support the establishment and continuity of wheelchair accessible taxi services in regional areas. The Regional Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Taxi Service Grant Scheme will be administered by the Department of Transport and is part of a $1.5 million McGowan Government commitment to improve accessible transport options for people with disability.
Broome was chosen to pilot the grant scheme due to its popularity as a tourism destination and its lack of an existing WAV taxi service. The Department of Transport will begin stakeholder engagement in Broome from September to confirm the demand and feasibility for a WAV taxi service, followed by an Expression of Interest process to award the grants. Outcomes from the pilot will be used to inform the roll-out of the grants to other regions, with priority given to towns without a current WAV taxi service and where demand shows a sustainable service could operate. In related news, Expressions of interest (EOIs) are now being accepted from authorised on-demand rank or hail (taxi) passenger transport drivers seeking a Rank or Hail Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Modification Grant. This Grant is used to help increase accessible transport options for people with disability, each year the Department of Transport (DoT) provides grants of up to $20,000 to assist eligible operators with the cost of purchasing and installing a wheelchair hoist and restraint systems in a wheelchair accessible on-demand rank or hail (taxi) vehicle.
