The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has released the official discussion paper for the 31st National Vocational Education and Training (VET) Research Conference ‘No Frills’, being held online, 6-8 July. The paper outlines the key talking points of the conference theme VET’s role in transforming the future and examines how the sector is adapting, anticipating and activating change in response to future skill demands.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti has introduced the Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Amendment Bill 2022 to Parliament on the 23 June 2022. The Act establishes a framework for regulating dealings between owner-drivers and their hirers and the new Bill will provide additional protections for these small businesses and individual contractors.

Scholarships are now available through Women & Leadership Australia to encourage more women to enhance their impact at work and beyond, and to support the development of women leaders at all levels. Partial scholarships of $1,000-$5,000 will support participation in one of four courses designed for women in non-leadership roles through to senior leaders.

Attracting, training and retraining skilled workers within required project timelines is a challenge not only for each of the Inland Rail project alignments but industry-wide. With this in mind the Australiasion Railway Association (ARA) has signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ARA and ARTC - Inland Rail. This will allow support of the Inland Rail project and provide access to a range of learning and training strategies, whilst harnessing the lessons learned from the delivery of Inland Rail for the ARAs wider member base.

The NDS has been developed as a partnership between ONRSR, the ARA and rail industry representatives, to provide a relevant, consistent and quality national rail safety data set readily available to stakeholders to inform rail safety decisions.

The Nowcast of Employment by Region and Occupation, or NERO, is a new experimental dataset, developed by the National Skills Commission (NSC). NERO provides timely information on employment in 355 occupations across 88 regions in Australia. Until now, this type of data was only readily available every five years as part of the ABS Census of Population and Housing.
Explore the NERO data dashboard on the National Skills Commission website. The first release of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2021 Census Data is now available and can be accessed using data tools such as QuickStats, Community Profiles, DataPacks and Data Explorer. Those interested in this data are encouraged to set up a free account through TableBuilder. The ABS have advised that although there is not a confirmed release date for the full Census 2021 dataset it will be available as soon as possible and prior to the second data release in October 2022.

The Building Digital Skills Grants Program provides funding assistance for organisations to help them to deliver training and support for older Australians to improve their digital literacy skills and confidence. The aim of the program is to enable organisations to support older Australians 50+ through free face-to-face contact (if feasible), either one-on-one or in small groups, to develop their digital skills and confidence, utilizing the learning courses available on the Be Connected Learning site. Applications close 22 July 2022.
The Transport and Logistics, and Rail Industry Reference Committees have submitted the Case for Endorsement and draft Training Package materials for the Mobile Crane, Driving Instruction and Rail Safety projects to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee for their consideration.
