The Aviation Services Accreditation Support Program provides financial assistance to Australia’s aviation industry to assist with the impact of COVID-19. A significant portion of aviation ground handling staff have not worked since March 2020 and due to this long period of negligible flying activity, the ground handling workforce are likely to require retraining and reaccreditation to ensure safety standards are maintained for all flights. Noting that ground handling organisations service all aspects of aviation, the Program will provide capped grants to eligible businesses to contribute to mandatory training, certification, and accreditation of ground handling workers essential for the operation of aircraft. Training support would be available for both new and existing employees, as required to support aviation recovery.

In late 2019, the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) established the Expert Panel to ‘provide advice on how Australia’s VET system can most effectively respond to digital change underway across industry and its impact on the nation’s workforce’. The Panel’s advice is captured in its Digital Transformation Skills Strategy, titled ‘The Learning Country’, which was considered by the AISC at its February 2021 meeting. The Panel believes that Australia’s VET system is pivotal to optimising what technology offers our economy, the many industries it comprises and our workforce.

Given the profound impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and social distancing measures on the provision of education and training, National Centre for Vocational and Educational Research (NCVER) latest Focus on explores the delivery of online learning in the VET sector. Drawing on the VOCEDplus database, it highlights recent research on the topic, focusing on the challenges facing education and training providers around the world and the innovative ways in which they have adapted from delivering face-to-face to delivering online.
The State Government endorsed the location and design of a conventional land-backed container port in Cockburn Sound South proposed by the Westport Taskforce for Perth’s future freight needs.
The Australian Industry Skills Committee (AISC) Committee has issued updated information on the delivery of first aid training in light of latest developments with COVID-19. RTOs delivering cardiopulmonary resuscitation within the First Aid units must ensure a risk assessment is completed before delivery and comply with State and Territory Health requirements and any local restrictions. In local areas where community transmission of COVID-19 has been reported, or where an area has been declared a hot spot, RTOs are able to make “reasonable adjustment” during CPR assessment.
Click here to see the AISC Advice. The Transport and Logistics Industry Reference Committee (IRC) has commenced the Crane High Risk Work Licence project. This project is at the request of Safe Work Australia to align nine Units of Competency in the Transport and Logistics Training Package with WHS regulations related to High-Risk Work Licences (HRWL) for crane operators, as set out in Schedule 4 to the model WHS Regulations. The IRC has established a Technical Advisory Committee of subject matter experts for the project.
