In November 2021 Main Roads announced a review of the Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence scheme. To assist Heavy Vehicle Services (HVS) undertake the review, a Pilot Licence Reference Group was established to consider significant aspects and inform decisions. The review is being led by an independent facilitator and meetings began in March 2022. Information about the progress of the group will be published on the My Say Transport website.

The Seamless Future Rail Skills Project has been initiated by Australian Industry Standards to improve access and pathways to current and future rail skills needed to build and operate the national rail network and to help increase workforce supply. Developing training pathways underpinned by a strategic skills audit will support new and existing workers shifting into new roles. 30 training pathways are being developed in four tranches under the guidance and direction of the project’s Technical Advisory Group and the Reference Group.

As part of the budget recently announced small businesses will receive a tax deduction to train new staff and upskill existing employees. Eligible small businesses will receive a $120 tax deduction for every $100 spent on training new employees.

A new national initiative, to showcase women in transport and tackle some of the negative perceptions of a career in road transport is now available. The National Women in Transport initiative aims to improve the gender balance within the transport sector, by progressing a series a national-level actions to increase the number of women working in transport.
As well as the dedicated website and speaker bureau profiling women leaders recently launched, over the next year the National Women in Transport program will also publish key transport workforce data and deliver a series of events to connect industry leaders. Two Qualifications, two Skill Sets and seven associated Units of Competency have been updated to address customer service skills and knowledge related to ticketing and security requirements.
Australian Industry Standards (AIS) have advised the following Training Packages have been updated in accordance with the Australian Industry Skills Committee’s (AISC) direction to update superseded imported first aid units (either as elective, core, or perquisites) by the 31 March 2022.
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has agreed to extend the transition period for superseded first aid units to 14 April 2022. The National Workforce Strategy has been released. The Strategy will guide the national effort to secure the current and future workforce and to ensure Australians are best equipped with the skills they need to attain a career.
